Security Design Patterns

08 Tuesday Sep 2009

Security is a challenging area within software design and development.  The fact that Microsoft have been pushing hard for a couple of years now with the high emphasis on security in their applications and still notable vulnerabilities show up is simple testament the the challenges.

So it is good to see that the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University have made a booklet/paper freely available that describes some Security Design Patterns (can be found here).  I’ve not yet read all of it – but the content I have reviewed is good solid guidance.

For Murray Walker fans (aka Muddly Talker) there is some fun news. The children’s animation – Roary the Racing Car which is narrated by the great Stirling moss is to get a special voice for a couple of episodes. The animation based on some racing cars at Silver hatch circuit already has the humorous contributions from Peter Kay as big Chris the mechanic. More info at the BBC News here.

I came across this – eBook Library Organizes and Indexes Your Books [Downloads] which looks interesting. I have a growing collection of eBooks and PDF based articles – as most engineers do.  The problem is quickly searching them for the information that is needed.  so We’ll be giving this tool a try.

Last Shop Standing

02 Wednesday Sep 2009

Last Shop StandingI’ve been reading the amusing, and in many respects tragic book Last Store Standing which is about the decline in the music industry and particularly the once fabulous Independent Record Stores. Below is a list of stores mentioned in the book that have their own websites, so music fans who want to help support the indie stores can provide them with our patronage.

The stores mentioned, that I know and have visited include

  • Adrian’s Records – Wickford
  • Rough Trade – London
  • Reflex – Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

Store’s Mentioned I don’t know:

  • A&A Music – Congleton
  • Acorn Records – Yeovil
  • Action Records – Preston
  • Andy’s Records – Aberystwyth
  • Bakewell Bookshop – Matlock
  • Bridport Music – Bridport
  • Cob Records – Bangor
  • Coda Music – Edinburgh
  • David’s Music – Letchworth
  • Derrick’s Music – Swansea
  • Diverse Records – Newport
  • Drift Music Shop – Totnes
  • Five’s Records – Leigh On Sea
  • Folk Devil’s – Whitby
  • JG Windows – Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
  • Jumbo Records – Leeds
  • Kane’s Records – Stroud
  • One Up Music – Aberdeen
  • Rapture – Witney
  • Raves From The Grave – Frome
  • The Record Corner – Godalming
  • Record Revivals – Scarborough
  • Rise – Cheltenham
  • Sounds – Dereham
  • Spiller’s Records – Cardiff
  • Townsend Records – Great Harwood
  • Vibes Records – Bury
  • Wall Of Sound Records – Huddersfield

In the checking of the sites, it looks as though a few more stores may have said farewell given that their web sites no longer respond.

Not mentioned in the book, but also brilliant:

  • Rock Box

Book’s website – http://www.lastshopstanding.co.uk

If you want to check the book out yourself – then visit one of the above indie record shops. Or if you need Amazon, then go here.

Great news The Delays are touring again this autumn – dates here. Hopefully we’ll see another album out soon as well.

In addition to that I checked out a recent Daytrotter session by a group called Copeland.  It isn’t heard to imagine this as The Delays in a chilled out mood.  worth checking out the session at http://www.daytrotter.com/dt/copeland-involving-us-in-their-autumn-concert/20030783-3738097.html
