Do we really need a an app for everything?

It is fascinating despite the fact that HTML5 and CSS3 give us very good user experience, when it comes solutions that largely push or marketing channels where caching has limited benefit there is still the ever growing perceived need to produce mobile apps. There are some great images which compares  Facebook as an app vs Facebook as a web app.

So, if the labels didn’t give the game away then, you’d be looking for the tell tail signs of the browser – icons at the bottom of the page.
So the question begs, why build the mobile app and the mobile capable web app?  The argument that the web app requires less traffic as you’re not downloading all he graphics has only limited credence as you have to pull all of this down with the app to start with. The browser will cache a lot of the content if you let it. Good web apps will make use of AJAX or Sockets to ensure only necessary content is retrieved so your download is going to be limited.  The offline argument doesn’t work as you’re trying to provide current content.

To be honest, I think a lot of the answer comes down to a couple of simple factors:

  •  is rather simple, a mobile app will find it easier to retrieve more information about the user
  • There is the mentality of I’m not a ‘digital’ player if I don’t have an app, and who isn’t going to challenge this?

So should we be pushing for OS providers to make it easier to install launch icons from your device (it is do able already but not in your face obvious).  But also allow web apps that are designed to work well on mobile devices to be certified and listed within their stores. Perhaps even offer a configuration shell that setups a desktop link as if an app has been downloaded.

Doing so should take the burden off the app stores! may not benefit beyond a small download bandwidth, but has to be good news for Apple and others.

Faithless free track

As a sweetner to get people to sign up to the immenent face lift of the official Faithless website there is a free download song (all part of the promo machine for the forthcoming new album). The song is called Sun To Me.  As a track the lyrics are pretty weak; but musically this a real club/gig number that will have the place bouncing like a bunch of nutters in the same way as God Is a DJ does (yes I’ve been to a few Faithless gigs).  All of which looks promising for the new album.  But what is also really cool is that as there isn’t an official video to go with the track a fan has created one, which has been picked up by the blog Arjan Writes.   The video is in some ways rather reminicent of I Want More.

Fingers crossed of a top album, and another tour.

Matthew Ryan has a new album out called Dear Lover,  if you cant wait then the digital release is available from now from Amazon, iTunes and via his own website here.  I what suggested that if you want an old fashioned  CD then you would have to wait until next year.  But the latest check on the website is saying ordering from the website and you’ll get it as quickly as the US Postal service can deliver it.

Unkle’s Psyence Fiction

As many are currently doing, DJ Shadow has just released a deluxe edition of their classic Psyence Fiction album. The special edition is available through DJ shadow’s site here. In addition to download version, he has followed Radiohead with the exclusive special pack of CDs, t-shirts etc – although they’ve already sold out. Atleast DJ Shadow isn’t just trying to extract money from old rope, he is also regularly releasing live performance recordings and remixes as well. Although I’ve yet to try such a recording (I didn’t enjoy the last studio work) his last live CD was a brilliant piece of work.  The album includes brilliant vocal performances from Thom York and Richard Ashcroft.

Moby seems to have a sussed the nice balance between record label managed websites for artists which tend towards the dull with just announcements for releases and tours, or the other extreme where artists blog about every little detail of life in the studio.  not to mention there is the regular sweetener of free tracks.  The latest being a remix of ‘One time We lived’ which can be found via Moby’s site here.

Moby

In addition to the remix,  NPR (US National Public Radio) have got a full Moby gig that can streamed or downloaded here.

Cat Power – Dark End Of The Street EP

Dark End Of The Street EP

Dark End Of The Street EP

Cat Power has according to her Record Label released a new EP released as two 10″ vinyl discs or as a digital download. As much as I like having vinyl, practicality dictates I dont get it – as I’m rapidly running out of storage space, not to mention generally mail order vinyl doesn’t arrive in immaculate condition very often. So I have to settle for the digital option.  I go to the obvious places to try buy the download – Amazon, HMV and so on – I’m trying very hard to avoid iTunes as I dont like its ethos. However no mention of the release. So I use our beloved Google, and get loads of hits from dodgy websites and nothing from online stores that I know to be legitimate. what is the point of priming the music press if you don’t follow through? It does leave me wondering why is it the music industry is moan ing about bit torrent and Russian online record stores with suspect licensing setups, if when they control press releases, have strong relationships with major music retailors cant get everything lined up?

In the end I’ve had to conceed to going to iTunes, purchasing the download and burning it to an audio and then back to MP3 so I can listen to the EP through my Slim Server – very annoying.
