A little while ago I was approached by Schmap travel guides seeking  permission to use one of the photos I’d taken when I was in Las Vegas.  I heard back today – the photo will be used, but as a result of a technical glitch the picture wont be in the guide until the next edition.  You can see where the photo will appear in the guide by going here.

The photo they will be using can be found on Flickr here.

I was reading a photography magazine and came across the mention of an interesting site – www.picnik.com – it allows you do photo editing online. This includes neat integration info Flickr.  As the article I read said, if you’re on the road and want to tweak and post some pictures – how much easier could it be?

Peter Lik Photography

We’ve had an email today from Peter Lik’s gallery in Sydney announcing some more photos (an image one of the pictures can be seen below). Like his other work the images are just stunning, beautiful shapes and colour that can be seen in nature.  For those not in the know, Peter was born in Australia started shooting the amazing scenery down under; but has over the last few years been shooting in the South West America and has garnered a raft of awards for his work.

We first came across Peter through friends, when they came back from Australia they gave us a book of some of his work.  So when we headed to Australia, and again when stopping over on our way to New Zealand we paid visits to his gallery in Sydney (in the beautiful QvB), and been fortunate enough to be able bring back limited, signed prints of his work.

These small images don’t do any real justice to the power of the work, you have to see them in their full size (1 meter across or bigger). So if you’re in Australia or the USA we’d very highly recommend going to a gallery and seeing for yourself.

Video Editing

25 Wednesday Jul 2007

With the Basingstoke Tappers’ show rapidly approaching and another year as stage manager it has been busy, busy, busy. With this year’s show I’ve also had to create some video clips.  I have to say that I am very impressed by Womble Multimedia’s  MPEG Video Wizard. Particularly it’s editing capabilities. The process of creating a MPEG file suitable for transcoding to DVD is a little more fiddly – although it does provide some default settings.

This batch of video clips I’ve been  are actually stills assembled into sequences. Although there are cheap or free tools for doing this sort of work they aren’t easy or flexible in the results you can produce, particularly in areas such as transitions between images, manipulation of sequencing on the fly and previewing of results.

I came cross this cool extension for Flickr provided by http://linuxside.org which give you page view stats on a daily basis for visits to your Flickr pictures.  An example of the results can be seen below.

If you have a Flickr website (ours is here) then its worth checking out.

Image Editing Freeware

There a number of small picture manipulation tasks that don’t need huge great applications such as PhotoShop or PaintShopPro such as quickly creating DVDs of your photos, looking at RAW or JPEG information. There are a lot of smaller apps on the net that provide these sort of features for a small license fee, and a few that are actually free.  Finding the free ones can be a pain, but someone has set up a neat little site – Photo-Freeware.net – Image Editing Freeware Download Source with links to the free applications and related useful information.

Beauty under your nose

When you look at flowers, often to you look real close to them, and see how beautiful they can be? Here are a few shots I’ve taken recently.

Interestingly enough, Peter Gabriel has been talking about the very samething in recent months in his ‘moon casts’ (see ww.petergabriel.com).

Mpre can bee seen on our flickr site (or go here).

thru traffic lights

Having leafed through a photography magazine the other week I saw some interesting night photography. Now that I’ve gone digital, I thought it was about time I experiemented a bit more in this area – I used to be hesitant about such things given you can easily write off an entire roll of quality film and processing and get nothing.

Anyway I’ve added a couple of photos showing my first attempts’ results.

Finally, get someone else to drive when doing this sort of thing, so you can concentrate on taking the pictures.

Microsoft Photo Info

05 Monday Feb 2007

been trying to find a tool that allows me to see EXIF information from photos easily (preferably as a tool tip) as Windows Explorer isn’t capable of doing it out of the box.  After a bit of hunting around I found that Microsoft have got a freebie solution themselves (Link to Download details: Microsoft Photo Info).

Along with this tool there is a partner app to work with RAW files (for those pro & semi pro-users).

The interesting thing is, that despite being on the MS download email every month, I don’t recall being told about the availability of this utility, and I only came across it by chance – thanks to another site’s reference to it.

A tree in Windsor Great Park with a dusting of Snow,

With the snow this morning, I thought I’d try to quickly capture some pictures as I passed through Windsor’s Great Park. Although the snow in Windsor hasn’t been as heavy as it has in other areas – so not as pretty as it can be after a decent snow fall, it did nicely increased the contrast against the great oak trees.
