Graphical representation of Net traffic out of New York

11 Tuesday Mar 2008

MIT have implemented a fascinating site that analyzes net traffic showing which cities around the world the traffic is travelling to and from. The traffic is then being brilliantly visualised.  The project was developed to help people analyse and understand the volumes of traffic and how it changes over time.  To see the site go here.

tough times for the RIAA ahead

07 Friday Mar 2008

The RIAA are being sued by a woman who was mistakenly sued for file sharing.  The case is likely to result in the RIAA disclosing both their process model (lawyers fees, what money goes back to the artists from settlements, how organisations such as Media Sentry are paid, how settlement figures are arrived at) and how they acquire the information on which their cases are built. Given the RIAA’s apparent track record in the area of acquiring information this could look bad, if not criminal.

If the disclosure of such information does look criminal and reach the public domain then it could trigger off a class action from all those who have been on the receiving end of the RIAA’s claims.  It would be very ironic if the class action does come to court as it could end up costing the RIAA more than they have recovered in settlements.  It would validate the argument that its bad business to sue all of your customers.

What ever happens, the outcome is likely to be months away, possibly even years.  For more detail on the case see the Wired article here.

Facebook

I have to admit having been a little unconvinced by social networking sites, they seem to only offer a poor man’s version of a web presence, photo sharing that pails besides Flickr, blogging that can’t touch WordPress et al. So my MySpace presence is only because I use MSN Messenger and it gives me a chance to create more links back to my own site – verging on anti-google-bashing. I picked up on LinkedIn purely because it provides a professional presence (something that some may suggest my domain name might not provide).

Then I signed up to Facebook, more out of curiosity, and a bit more more anti-google-bashing.  But the provision of the APIs has made a world of difference. I can integrate my Flickr and LinkedIn profiles along with a dozen other best of bread solutions.

I had the chance to have a chat with Tom Baeyens, the lead for JBoss’ jBPM development programme who has a blog at Process Developments.  He has recently blogged, giving SeeWhy a little mention as a result of our conversation.

The Killer App for CEP

The online journal ebizQ are providing a webinar on ‘BAM:The Killer App for CEP’. Although SeeWhy would suggest that this is not exclusively the domain of Complex Event Processing, but any tool around Event Processing with a real-time capacity.  It would seem that SeeWhy is not the only organisation that sees how BAM (Business Activity Monitoring) is a natural partner for Event Processing as SeeWhy has produced an extension to its real-time Business Intelligence platform called ‘SeeWhy for JBoss jBPM’.

The webinar is sponsored by SL who provide a real-time style dashboard so will give some basic visibility of business activity, but doesn’t have the richness of SeeWhy’s intelligence or ability to feedback into the source system such as jBPM or event a third party.

conference, JBoss

We’re back from JBoss World in Orlando now – and a few pictures of the trip can be found at Flickr: JBoss World Orlando.  A very busy trip indeed with only an hour in the sunshine at the end of the conference before heading back to the airport.  For SeeWhy initial impressions are that the conference was a success, but it is still early days to really tell.  Thankyou to all who came to see our stand and talk about Event Driven BI and the new jBPM BAM solution. Plus a special thanks to David Barnes at Packt publishing and Matt Cumberlidge the brilliant author of the book  Business Process Management with JBoss jBPM.

Laptop & The Presentation

14 Thursday Feb 2008

Over the years the number of people who attend conference presentations and have laptops out to take notes has grown and grown – understandable given how laptop prices have dropped.  But watching a presentations here at JBoss World Orlando, has left me thinking that there is an opportunity to be had in terms of allowing peoples laptops to show and record what is being shown on the presenters screen, and allow the laptop user to annotate as things went along.  After all if you’re in a medium sized conference suite amongst a see of upright laptop monitors it can be hard to see the presenters screen clearly.  The basic idea isn’t exactly new either  after all web meeting tools such as GoToMeeting pretty much do this.  The only difference is that the server would need to run on the presenter’s computer equipment through a local wireless hub.

Amazon MP3 to go global

29 Tuesday Jan 2008

Horrah, Amazon have finally announced that they are to expand their MP3 store to work outside of the USA. Although no explicit time line has been specified the hints are that it will happen in the next year.  given the demographics I’d imagine that the European stores will be the next to receive the MP3 store.

The press release  can be found here.

The real excitement for this announcement is potentially very interesting opportunity exists with Amazon, that being their infrastructure for the Marketplace means that very small indie artists and labels could play on a fairly level playing field with the major labels.

Monster’s YouTube Channel

29 Tuesday Jan 2008

YouTube tends to be associated with personal video clips of chunks of broadcast programmes illegally shared. However more academic material has been posted. The quality of this material can be variable, for example:

the panning and capture of the slide material isn’t great, BUT to listen to the presentation is very informative and interesting.

To show the material that I’ve been watching (and recommend) I registered and established my own Channel along with playlists.

Skype via Pidgin

25 Friday Jan 2008

As a user of several different platforms, N770, U3 as well as laptop & desktop PCs I’ve found Pidgin to be very helpful as it allows me to communicate still using my Windows Live Messenger account.

Business wise a number of my contacts use Skype, so ideally to make my presence visible those people having Pidgin and Skype integrated would be perfect.  well I’ve found something at http://www.imessengr.com/2007/11/skype-plugin-for-pidgin-gaim-and-adium.html that may well do the trick.
