Good Morning Nantwich

I’ve been reading Phill Jupitus’ Good Morning Nantwich, an autobiographical book about how he arrived to do the Breakfast show on BBC’s 6 Music, with a look at how Breakfast Radio arrived in the common form it is today, and listener behaviours.  If you love music, or radio then you’ll enjoy this book.  Given Phill’s standup comedian roots there is plenty of humour in here as well, it has had me laughing out load.

There are some great quotes as well,  one of my favourites so far is (with reference to DJs):

The more of the record that is playing that they talk over, the bigger a tool they are

Each chapter of the book is completed with a playlist,  I hope Phill and the publishers dont mind, but I thought I’d share some of these with you.

Chapter 1 : Workers’ Playtime:

  • Fear Is A Man’s Best Friend – John Cale
  • Theme from The Godfather/Al Capone – Jazz America
  • Get A Job – The Chordettes
  • Start – The Jam
  • Good Morning – The Beatles
  • Hitsville UK – The Clash
  • Rez – Underworld
  • Train Song – Holly Cole
  • What Do I Do Now? – Elvis Costello
  • A13, Rrunk Road To The Sea – Billy Bragg

Keep checking back as I’ll post more of the lists 🙂

what Santa delivered part 2, or another list for New Year

Tags

I was given a copy of “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die” for Christmas – the complete list can be seen at http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/steveparker/1001albums.htm. although the last 5-10 years as seen the rise of the New Year/End of Year lists I have to admit to being a bit of a geek to this sort of things, and pleased to stay that I stack up well on the 1001 albums. But my family might not be so happy as the i look to go after those gaps in the collection.

Aside from the music geek factor, the book itself is rather good, with a brief description of the album and its significance. I only discard with a couple of entries in the list – such as Culture Club (puuuleeease, that is just terrible). I’m sure Mrs Monster can relate to Phill Jupitus’ wife got the news that he was going to work for 6 music brilliant – steady income, but also the realisation that its the perfect excuse to buy lots more music.

A worthwhile addition for the music obsessive.

what Santa delivered

Well Santa may have delivered all of his presents, and its time to try on our new socks and so on, I do one present that looks fabulous, but Im hesitant to actually use – http://faithless.sandbag.uk.com/Store/BoxSet.html the limited edition Faithless Dance box set with vinyl (beautiful) version of the album along with remix version of the album.

This leads me into something I have been meaning to blog about for a while. That being the ever growing trend to keep rereleasing albums with bonus disks or just extra tracks.
Faithless have been doing this for 15 years now from their Reverence (and Irrevence alter ego). But things are getting crazy now in the attempt to milk it from fans. Take Michael Buble’s current album. There are at last count 3 different versions with different additional tracks.

From a syndical perspective this is the record albums trying to extract multiple purchases from the core fans. But is it doing them any favours? I’m not convinced, I believe people are savvy to this game now, so are hanging on for the rerelease, and perhaps downloading legally or otherwise the initial release, or doing the reverse, being good citizens, and then getting annoyed and sourcing the additional tracks in a manner that may not be so desirable to the industry; an own goal?

Time Zones

Time Zones.is a pretty cool site for working out what time it is in different timezones by just dragging a bar.  Another cool alternative is GMT Slider, which also has a cool widget that you can embed into you a website e.g. http://www.gmtslider.com/widget.jsp?id=aglnbXRzbGlkZXJyEQsSCUdNVFdpZGdldBi5iwQM

Faithless at Bournemouth International Conference centre

We have been lucky not have been overly affected by the snow, so managed to get across to Bournemouth last night to see Faithless perform again in support of their album The Dance. Some photos can be seen at mp3monstrer photos .

It was a great gig, with a lot of the tracks from the latest album working very well in a live format (I have to admit I was disappointed when I heard the album). Some of the older numbers have been made a lot ‘beefier’.

In addition for this tour you can buy almost immediately after the concert a live recording (these can also be ordered from the Faithless website).

If you get a chance to see Faithless live, we would recommend it.

the Delays at Southampton Uni

We caught the Delays playing their hometown again last night with the excellent support Birdpen. Although the band appeared in their usual jovial, lively selves the gig itself just didn’t seem to carry the same energy that we’ve seen at venues like The Joiners and Southampton Guildhall which was a shame. It could be at least impart something to do with the venue, as the acoustics weren’t great – possibly because of the relatively low ceilings.

We did pickup their new live album that they band are selling at the venues and will soon be available through the website. The album is a recording of their Christmas gig last year at the Brooks another Delays regular haunt in Southampton.

It is interesting that a number of smaller artists are picking up on this activity – we saw Tom McRae earlier in the week and he has also released a couple of albums that he is selling exclusively through his website and at concerts.

Photos from both events can be seen at photos.mp3monster.org
