Oracle Node.js cloud service

A while back I posted about using the use of Node.js cloud service Oracle had marked as coming soon (Blog post here). Well we have checked back to see if the free trial is openly available and it still appears not yet to be the case.  But more than that, Oracle have reorganised the capability here to form what they are now calling Application Container Cloud (ACC). The application container cloud provides a number of options for running Node.js or a pure play J2SE solution. 
   
The good news is that there is a lot more detail of what the options are with this cloud which includes just Node.js – the details can be seen here. So node 0.10 and 0.12 are supported and JDKs 7 & 8 are supported. With the JDK you also get the use of cruise control. The metering periods go down to the hour as well which is great for PoC activities. The level of detail provided, suggests that these cloud solutions are currently available to partners and paying customers (the JDK service is certainly the case based on discussions I have had with my account manager). So hopefully as Oracle rollout their cloud offerings into data centres and capacity grows we should see public trial access.

Cloud Document Security

So an interesting piece of research was published by the Cloud Security Alliance. The research shows the growth of document sharing in the enterprise through the use of cloud services.  The interesting thing is one of the positives of adopting SaaS and PaaS is easing the challenge of ensuring environments are patched for security. But at the same time the need to educate the wider employee community even more on being security aware.

It also raises the question of managing the accidental or deliberate leakage in such an environment. As the article says, some sharing of documents to the public or 3rd parties to enable cross business collaboration may well be legitimate so businesses are going to need strategies to address this.

It has been a while coming but the Oracle SOA Cloud was announced yesterday. Surprisingly, the fanfare for this key product hasn’t been held back for Oracle Open World which is only a few weeks away now. So no more building SOA on top of the Java Cloud Service. Along with SOA CS (Cloud Service) is API Management. But the release of information with yesterday’s announcement is coming quickly – for example UKOUG are running an innovation day which has had SOA Cloud session included in it.  Here are a few resources that I’ve seen so far :

It looks like from the details available that SOA Cloud includes the core composites, BPEL and OSB pieces, but BAM, Scheduling, B2B are yet to be released.

The Oracle Customer Advisory Board on the end of Open World should be a very interesting day.

It seems to becoming the done thing to license the use of the ‘For Dummies’ brand and publishing books (or are they large booklets) on a specific subject. These can then often be picked up as print freebies at conferences. I saw a couple at the Oracle Cloud Event today – though I’d share the ebook versions here:

When I first heard about the Oracle & Xamarin tie up to support Oracle’s Mobile Cloud Service  – MCS(to use one of those xaaS acronyms we’re talking MBaaS – Mobile Backend aaS) I was little surprised and puzzled as for any Java/Javascript developer Oracle already their Mobile Application Framework which includes Apache Cordova and some Xamarin style cross compiling for native capabilities for Java.

It’s when you look at information such as that provided by DeveloperEconomics.com some sense becomes apparent. Oracle aren’t so much as abandoning MAF as trying to create conditions where all roads lead to MCS as the 2 most popular cross platform/x-compile mobile frameworks which represent 75% or more of the framework usage.  It is also likely (but I speculate here) that providing an Xamarin API and SDK probably isn’t that significant an investment given all of it has been built to support MAF already.

As late comers to the cloud service market, his sort of approach stands to increase Oracle’s potential to gain market share. The fact that they have got Xamarin onboard and the commitment (regardless of how easy it may have been to leverage existing work) Oracle’s decision to seek global domination in PaaS and SaaS markets. For this to pay off though Oracle need to shed the image of its only for the big boys with deep pockets.

On Friday I attended Estafet‘s UK leading 1st open session on Oracle Integration Cloud Service (ICS). A great session run by Phil McLoughlin from Estafet.It was good to hear people’s perspectives on the capability and value proposition.  The session included an update from the Director of Product Management James Allerton-Austin.  So aside from ICS having gone live, we can expect several more of the middleware services previously mentioned launched in the second half on 2015, including:

  • SOA Suite (possibly OSB as a discrete service)
  • Business App Developer
  • Node JS

The messaging around far faster cloud release cycles was reaffirmed again with cycles in 6-12 week time frame. For example support for REST based web services will be in the next update – so no more than a month or two from now.

In addition to this I’ve heard that if you want to have ODI in the cloud it is certified to run on the Java Cloud Service – this is no surprise given that until the full SOA cloud is available you can deploy SOA into JCS. The question is will there be a ODI cloud offering.

So 22nd June saw Larry Ellison announce a raft of new Oracle cloud services, and the beefing up of some existing services.  Based on what he said, Oracle are about to seriously go to war with a number of major players. So much so one of Gartner’s analysts tweeted that they see something of a shakeup in the market. Not only as Oracle has the delivery muscle, but based on figures Larry presented also on price – Oracle’s Cloud Archive offering which is being aimed at Amazon Web Services’ Glacier was quoted at a 1/10th of the price!  Okay, we need to see all the costs, but the headline numbers are sounding extremely competitive.

In terms of service that I’m looking forward to have a play with are:

  • Node.JS
  • Java Standard Edition
  • Java Cloud (aka Weblogic) with SOA deployed
  • JRuby
  • Simple Business Application Builder

Not all of these service are openly accessible yet, or offer Trial periods, but the access is only a matter of time now.

This little list doesn’t even touch on the IaaS or SaaS.

We’re progressing with our Oracle Cloud Integration book idea now that we’ve had some publisher interest. 1st cycle around defining the book should be submitted in the next day or so.  Will starting to write the initial chapters very soon. Exciting times as they say.

This book continues the very high standard we have come to expect from ServiceTech Press. The book provides well explained vendor agnostic patterns to the challenges of providing or using cloud solutions from PaaS to SaaS. The book is not only a great patterns reference, but also a worth reading from cover to cover as the patterns are thought provoking, drawing out points that you should consider and ask of a potential vendor if you’re adopting a cloud solution.

The book reviewing opportunities are coming thick & fast. In addition to currently providing review feedback on a forthcoming book on Apache Camel to be published by Packt (previous blog entry),  I’ve been fortunate to get the opportunity to review another book in development as part of the Thomas Erl Technical Series, this time on Cloud Design Patterns.  From what I’ve seen before, the books is unsurprisingly going to have a similar style to the other patterns books in the series.  It is also living upto the same high standard of insight.  You can see some information from the website that will be supporting the book at http://www.cloudpatterns.org/ and the from the publisher at http://servicetechbooks.com/cloudpatterns.

In looking at some background to one of the patterns, it was also interesting to note that despite Oracle now having focused a lot of its massive resources at cloud offerings, has no apparent involvement with the Cloud Security Alliance, even though most of the other businesses that Oracle could consider to be potential competitors or are premier partners are associated with it (CSA Corporate Membership).
